Leblon Observation Deck/Av. Niemeyer
Avenida Niemeyer is one of the most iconic roads in Rio de Janeiro, not only for its stunning views but also because of its role in the city’s infrastructure. The road was initially conceived at the end of the 19th century as part of a railway that would connect Botafogo to Angra dos Reis. The original project began in 1891. The plan was to carve a passage in the hillside. However, challenging geographic conditions and limited financial resources stalled progress for about two decades.

In the early years of the 20th century, the idea of opening this route resurfaced, but this time to be used by road vehicles. In 1915, the engineer Conrado Niemeyer resumed the project and financed it, transforming the former railway route into a road from Leblon to São Conrado. On 20 October 1916, Avenida Niemeyer was officially inaugurated, becoming one of the first connections between Rio de Janeiro’s South Zone and the West Zone which was considered far away at that time.
The road was also the scene of historic events, such as the car races of the 1930s, when the Gávea Circuit, known as the “Devil’s Springboard,” drew crowds who were eager to see sports cars speeding around the Avenida Niemeyer bends. In 1920, the road underwent improvements for the visit of King Albert I of Belgium, and one of the bends was widened and a viaduct, named after the monarch, was constructed.

The road blends stunning landscapes and a vibrant atmosphere along its 4.76 km and is used by locals and tourists alike. Avenida Niemeyer has also become a symbol of contrasts, as it connects affluent neighborhoods, like Leblon, to communities such as Vidigal and Rocinha, creating a geographical and cultural link between the different social realities of Rio de Janeiro.
