Rio, capital da colônia
In 1763, the city of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro became the capital of Colonial Brazil, replacing São Salvador. The change was a consequence of the strategic position Rio held due to its proximity to the Minas region – where abundant alluvial gold had been found in the late 17th century – and it gave the city immense prominence, from a political and economic standpoint.
