Rio, Cidade em transformação

CURADORIA

Antonio Edmilson Rodrigues Martins

The gallery presents the urban development of Rio over its almost five centuries of existence, from before its founding to the present day. The changes in ways of building and living, the key players in the transformation of urban space, and the different strategies for making Rio de Janeiro a healthier city are the guiding threads of this journey through Rio, a city in transformation.

A nova Paris nos trópicos

At the beginning of the 20th century, the ambition to turn Rio de Janeiro into a "great European capital" consolidated with the arrival of Francisco Pereira Passos to the mayor's office of the Federal District. The engineer, who had participated in debates regarding the "civilization" of the city since the end of the previous century, was responsible for the transformations in the central region, which conferred upon Rio the status of "Paris in the Tropics." The opening of the Central Avenue, the construction of the Municipal Theater, and the buildings of the National Library and the School of Fine Arts established art nouveau and eclectic architecture in the capital which, despite all attempts at civilization, still coexisted with the misery and customs understood — by the elite — as symbols of backwardness.
