The gallery presents the urban development of Rio over its almost five centuries of existence, from before its founding to the present day. The changes in ways of building and living, the key players in the transformation of urban space, and the different strategies for making Rio de Janeiro a healthier city are the guiding threads of this journey through Rio, a city in transformation.

Nasce uma cidade

The first to see Guanabara Bay was Gaspar de Lemos, in 1502. After him, other navigators passed through these waters and in 1565, Estácio de Sá founded the city of São Sebastião do Rio de Janeiro, at the entrance to the bay - more precisely between the Morros Cara de Cão and Pão de Açúcar. Two years later, in the last battle against the French for the dominion of these lands in 1567, the city's founder was mortally wounded and his uncle, Mem de Sá, transferred the headquarters to the top of another hill: the Morro do Castelo.
