CURADORIA
Antonio Edmilson Rodrigues Martins
The gallery presents the urban development of Rio over its almost five centuries of existence, from before its founding to the present day. The changes in ways of building and living, the key players in the transformation of urban space, and the different strategies for making Rio de Janeiro a healthier city are the guiding threads of this journey through Rio, a city in transformation.

Rio, capital do império português
The imminent Napoleonic invasion in Portugal and the consequent flight of the Royal Family to the Colony in the Americas, in 1808, initiated a new phase in the history of Brazil and, principally, of Rio, which became the capital of the Portuguese Empire. The city became internationalized starting from the opening of the ports, incorporating itself definitively into the Western world. As a consequence, the republican ideas that emerged from the inconfident movements were pushed aside and efforts turned toward the Enlightenment reforms and the process of "Europeanization" of Rio de Janeiro, initiated in the 18th century.
