Rio, Cidade em transformação

CURADORIA

Antonio Edmilson Rodrigues Martins

The gallery presents the urban development of Rio over its almost five centuries of existence, from before its founding to the present day. The changes in ways of building and living, the key players in the transformation of urban space, and the different strategies for making Rio de Janeiro a healthier city are the guiding threads of this journey through Rio, a city in transformation.

Rio, capital do Império Brasileiro

Until the 19th century, the elites and the poor classes mixed, predominantly, in the city's central parishes: the elites in the parishes close to the center of political power and the poor in the more remote locations. But the population density in the region, allied with the city's expansion to more distant areas, contributed to the migration of the wealthy classes to the then-distant south zone. From the arrival of the French Artistic Mission, neoclassicism began to become part of the scenery of the noble areas, while the poor classes coexisted in the areas where misery formed the landscape. The sanitarist discourse - aimed at health and beauty - gained expressiveness throughout the century and it was from these conceptions that the urban space began to be conceived.
