O Rio e seus contrastes
The 1920s brought important changes to Rio, with a distinction of functions and uses of the different parts of the city. The south zone, oriented toward leisure activities due to the waterfront, consolidated starting from population growth and urban development, producing a landscape different from that characteristic rusticity of the white sand shores and the noise of the sea. Starting from Tijuca, the north zone took the direction of work, concentrating economic activities based on the use of labor from the popular and middle sectors of the city. This duality, however, did not mean, at first, a divided city. The new design was the result not only of the region's geography, but also of urban projects. The neighborhoods of Copacabana and Meier are good examples to understand this facet of Rio.
