Rio Desaparecido

CURADORIA

Antonio Edmilson Rodrigues Martins

The speed of the changes that happen in the city of Rio is impressive: monuments, buildings, and squares are erected and destroyed in the blink of an eye. Professions, shops, and habits go away often without records. Many of these narratives were recovered in this gallery, as well as the history of people who had their lives subtracted in an unexpected way.

Estas eram nossas praias

Those who pass today along Franklin Roosevelt Avenue, with its buildings and horns bordering part of downtown Rio, cannot imagine that there, in the past, what existed were the calm waters of Santa Luzia beach, an example of a seaside resort that no longer exists. The history of Rio is riddled with beaches that, like this one, disappeared from the map, not by the natural cadence of winds, waves, and sand, but rather by the eagerness of authorities to intervene in the urban space.
