CURADORIA

Antonio Edmilson Rodrigues Martins

The Rio Operário Gallery presents a panorama of the life, work, and struggles of workers in the city of Rio de Janeiro, mainly those from the textile factories that, from the late 19th century until the 1930s, occupied the city's landscape, forming neighborhoods, influencing ways of life, adding music and poetry to the city, and marking out urban spaces that gained the status of places of memory.

Fábricas de tecido

The peak of the textile factories in Rio de Janeiro was the period between 1870 and 1920. These factories altered the city's landscape, formed neighborhoods and opened new paths. On the other hand, they also acted as builders of the working class, incorporating part of the previously enslaved labor and adding the contingent of European immigrants who arrived in the city starting from the mid-19th century. The textile factories helped to outline the country's industrialization process.
