Rio Suburbano

CURADORIA

Rafael Mattoso

Speaking of the suburbs presupposes addressing the entire complexity of the knowledge, flavors, and experiences of its residents. The Rio Suburbano gallery is an invitation to understand the history of the areas that emerged from the construction of factories and the railway line, their own forms of spatial, cultural, and mobility organization. Their renewed knowledge and traditions, their identities and ways of being and being in this urban and affective cartography. It is a celebration of the specific practices of its inhabitants. Memories that account for the minutiae of suburban life, such as running after and delighting in sweets from Cosme and Damião, flying kites in the streets and on rooftops, appropriating the sidewalk or public roads to lay a stroke of concrete or to celebrate some important date.

Habitar os subúrbios

In most regions of the Rio suburbs, it is undeniable that life processes through a game of scales dimensioned, primarily, by the residences, streets, and tracks that promote the interlocution of their inhabitants.

In this scenario, doors and windows always seem to demonstrate an opening, in the form of an exchange, between public spaces and the singularities of the private field of the houses.

In this room, we direct our gaze toward the ways of living, dwelling, and relating in the suburbs. The idea of sharing views, that is, how we see the city of Rio de Janeiro from the squares, backyards, balconies, and other suburban prisms.

Thus making it possible to see and better understand how we coexist and inhabit our suburbs.
