Rio Suburbano

CURADORIA

Rafael Mattoso

Speaking of the suburbs presupposes addressing the entire complexity of the knowledge, flavors, and experiences of its residents. The Rio Suburbano gallery is an invitation to understand the history of the areas that emerged from the construction of factories and the railway line, their own forms of spatial, cultural, and mobility organization. Their renewed knowledge and traditions, their identities and ways of being and being in this urban and affective cartography. It is a celebration of the specific practices of its inhabitants. Memories that account for the minutiae of suburban life, such as running after and delighting in sweets from Cosme and Damião, flying kites in the streets and on rooftops, appropriating the sidewalk or public roads to lay a stroke of concrete or to celebrate some important date.

Saborear os subúrbios

Commensality is the term of Latin origin used to define the practices of living together at the table. It primarily involves the way one eats, but it is not only about tasting or savoring something. In practice, it means much more; it is directly related to living together, relating to others, learning, and exchanging experiences from the collective sharing of food. In the suburbs, the conviviality established from the habit of eating and drinking becomes a fundamental element for understanding our own Carioca sociability.

Sitting at the table, settled on the floor, or standing with plate and glass in hand, almost anything goes when it comes to suburban affections and flavors. Whether cultivating, preparing, or tasting, one is always simmering, transforming, and composing stories. Ancestral spices, smells, and flavors interlace subjects with the heritages that merged and helped create a sense of suburbanity.
