Uma Literatura na Corte
The formation and consolidation of the literary field in Rio de Janeiro occurred from the intimate relationship between journalism and literature. During the Empire, every political and national debate passed through the pen of writers, through the voices of Carioca speakers, through the romantic nationalist verve, through the public figures of the poet, through the activism of the abolitionists, and through the intense circulation of folhetins. Alongside this, the city slowly invented a Carioca reading public, even with a largely illiterate population and distant from the written code.
