Literaturas cariocas

During the republican period, it was writers and already mature genres such as the short story that gave shape to a literature of genuinely local flavor. This caused Rio and its inhabitants to become fundamental characters in their stories. The growing presence of literature, from the French-influenced tone of its first authors, through the chronicle as the quintessential Carioca genre, to the texts that speak of disadvantaged viewpoints and possible futures for the city, became inseparable from the popular imagination about the city.
