Visões sobre o Rio

The historical process of literature in Rio de Janeiro had as a counterpoint the massive presence of the city in various foreign writings produced during the colonial period (until 1822). The city with its bay, its hills, rivers, and forests, was an obligatory point of passage for European travelers who left marks on the imaginary of Brazilian authors. It was the descriptions of the French, English, Germans, and Portuguese that gave an Edenic and, at the same time, chaotic profile to posterity – nature, exoticism, and slavery were themes that many highlighted with their cosmopolitan and colonialist visions. This process, which can be dated from the 16th century, became increasingly stronger when, throughout the 20th century, the world imaginary of the “marvelous city” began to also occupy the fields of popular music and cinema.
