CURADORIA

Heloisa Murgel Starling

In the city, there is sound. Rio de Janeiro is song and noise. Our ears listen to an old samba playing in a botequim, the "olha o mate" shout on the beach, the carnival block passing in the street, the helicopter overflying a community. Silence does not exist. As we walk through the streets, we are invaded by sounds and noises with which we identify ourselves and identify the city.

It is not uncommon for the sound of drums to blend with the tolling of church bells. The rhythm of samba, with its sensual impetus, is a transformed heritage of traditions of African matrix. Odô Yiá, Odô Yiá, celebrate the worshippers of Iemanjá, mixing their chanting with the noise of the sea. In the early morning of April 23, fireworks wake the city: it is the dawn of Saint George. On the same day, the terreiros offer batuques to Ogum. Rio is a crossroads of sounds, a space marked by the intersection of cultures whose daily result is the pulsating link between faith and feast.
