Aí está ele, o mar, o mais ininteligível das existências não humanas

Rio de Janeiro is an Atlantic city, as the maps indicate and Geography asserts. But, History makes Rio an Afro-Atlantic city: its relationship with the Ocean Sea happened largely because it connected with this other shore, and its importance in what is called the Atlantic World arises mainly from its connection with Africa. Rio de Janeiro is a port city, a place of arrivals and departures, and also a link with the inland routes that connect the sea – on all its shores – with the country's interior.

The sea, with its sounds and images, is an element that runs through all the rooms.

As pedras pisadas do cais

Rio de Janeiro as a city was definitively born linked to the Atlantic Ocean and its shores. A port, a place of arrival and disembarkation, where one can set foot on firm ground, on the stony sands of the bay's beaches, or upon the trampled stones of the piers. Much later than its foundation, they placed the statue of Cristo Redentor with open arms, receiving those who are brought here by the maritime routes. Not without reason is he turned toward Guanabara Bay; it is toward those who come from the Atlantic that the movement of the embrace is directed. There are those who say, and with reason, that this welcoming is not for everyone, nor ever was. But, the open arms are there. History makes us think about that.
