The Mercado Municipal was one of the city's most impressive architectural complexes, as well as one of the country's largest trading centers. Opened in December 1907, it began operating in 1908, in the space where Praça XV is located today. It was created during the administration of Mayor Pereira Passos, in order to bring order to the food trade, which up to that point had been scattered across several streets downtown. In addition, it officially replaced the old Mercado da Candelária.

Historic building with trees and a rounded roof.Image description: This is a black-and-white photograph of a building with historic architecture. On the left side, we see trees with bare branches, while on the right there is another tree with leaves. The building has three main levels, with large windows and grilles on the side façades. The roof is rounded and covered with tiles. At the top, there is a circular structure with stained-glass windows. The ground in front of the building is covered with fallen leaves.

Its prefabricated metal structure was imported from Europe, as were the towers and the clock. Its roughly 200 stalls sold mainly foodstuffs, beverages, and dry goods. It was a bustling space. Its demolition is, to this day, a rather controversial episode. The market was torn down, after all, to make way for the Elevado da Perimetral, in 1963. Its only remaining trace is the structure of the former Albamar restaurant, now called Ancoramar.

Municipal market in black and white, aerial view of urban area with buildings and boats.Image description: This is a black-and-white photograph of a municipal market seen from above. The image shows an urban area with several buildings and structures. On the left side, there is a large open area, possibly a field or square, surrounded by buildings of different heights. In the center, a construction with domes stands out, which may be the Mercado Municipal. On the right, there are more buildings and a coastal area with boats sailing. The sky is clear, and the lighting suggests the photo was taken during the day.
