A capital da 1ª República em confronto
At the end of the 19th century, Rio de Janeiro ceased to be the imperial court to become the capital of the Republic. The change may seem like a small detail, but it represents a fundamental transformation in political terms: the cariocas were no longer subjects of a king. From November 15, 1889, they began to be considered citizens. The Constitution of 1891 guaranteed this right on paper. It was necessary, however, to realize it in practice. To that end, it was necessary to exercise citizenship in the streets of the city.
