The Companhia de Fiação e Tecidos Confiança Industrial was inaugurated in 1885, in the neighborhood of Vila Isabel. Before the arrival of electric power, it used the strength of the waters of Rio Joana to power its boilers and all of its industrial machinery.
The Company stood out as one of the largest and most modern textile factories in Brazil in the 20th century. In addition to its industrial production, it generated social impacts: it built workers' villages, created a school for employees' children, and founded the Confiança Atlético Clube, a team formed by the workers, which went on to compete in significant championships until it was disbanded in the early 1990s.
The factory's daily routine shaped the lives of the region's residents. One example was the three whistles that sounded throughout the day, regulating work shifts. This soundscape became part of everyday life in Vila Isabel and inspired Noel Rosa to write the song "Três Apitos," in 1931. The song shows the poet courting a woman who works at the factory - said to be Josefina, one of the women with whom Noel had a romantic relationship during a period of his life.
The history of Fábrica de Tecidos Confiança was also marked by economic crises and recoveries. In 1929, it suffered the impacts of the New York Stock Exchange crash, but it recovered again during World War II, when it became the main supplier of fabrics for the uniforms of the Brazilian Armed Forces.
After 85 years of operation, the factory ceased its activities in 1970. Part of its space was adapted for commercial use and has housed several supermarkets. The architectural complex was listed as a heritage site in 1938 and follows the style of English factories common at that time, keeping preserved the memory of a place that profoundly marked the industrial, social, and cultural history of Vila Isabel.
