Noel de Medeiros Rosa was born on December 11, 1910, in the neighborhood of Vila Isabel, in the North Zone of Rio de Janeiro. His birth was marked by a forceps intervention, which caused a fracture responsible for a permanent deformity in his chin. Born into a middle-class family, he grew up in a musical environment that would later decisively influence his career path. His first instrument was the mandolin, which he learned to play with his mother. He studied at the traditional Colégio São Bento and even enrolled in medical school, dropping out to pursue his true calling: music.

Estátua de Noel Rosa on an urban curb, with old buildings on the left and modern ones on the right.Image description: The image is a photograph of a statue located on a curb along a city street. The statue depicts Noel Rosa, as mentioned in the text on the plaque beneath it. To the left, there are old buildings with colorful façades, including a yellow building. To the right, there are modern buildings and a blurred car in motion. In the center, there is a large tree behind the statue. The plaque at the base of the statue contains information about Noel Rosa.

The beginning of his artistic career took place with the group Bando de Tangarás, founded in 1929 by Almirante, which recorded musical genres such as coco, embolada and maracatu, revealing Noel's closeness to Brazilian popular roots. A regular presence at the main strongholds of Rio's samba, such as the hills of Mangueira, São Carlos, Macacos, the Festa da Penha and the bars of Lapa, Noel moved through spaces of Black sociability where he established unprecedented partnerships with samba musicians. He came to know samba at its origin — in Rio's favelas — and helped bring it to the asphalt and to the major radio stations, contributing to the consolidation of the genre.

He partnered with names like Cartola, Ismael Silva, Heitor dos Prazeres, Vadico, Orestes Barbosa, and Francisco Alves. He created a simple, direct popular poetry deeply connected to everyday life, addressing themes such as hunger, money, malandragem, work, the morro, and urban life, almost always blending humor and drama. In just six years, he composed more than 250 songs, many considered classics of Brazilian music. His main performer was the singer Aracy de Almeida.

In his personal life, he was marked by controversies and intense romances, such as his marriage to Lindaura Martins and his love affair with Ceci, a dancer and prostitute from Lapa, who inspired songs like "Dama do Cabaré." Suffering from tuberculosis, he died on May 4, 1937. Today, his memory lives on in Vila Isabel, especially in the sculpture on Boulevard 28 de Setembro, a reference to the samba "Conversa de Botequim." Noel Rosa, the Poet of Vila, popularized samba and helped turn it into a symbol of national identity.
