A landmark of Rio, the Church of N. S. da Penha de França sits atop a cliff, in the Penha neighborhood, located in the Zona Norte of the city. With its traditional feast dedicated to the patron saint, the Penha church holds great religious and cultural importance for Rio.

It is built on an elevated site, with a wide, long staircase leading up to it. To the right of the staircase, there is a line of tracks for a blue cable car. In the background, we see a densely populated city, with several buildings of different heights. The landscape is made up of green vegetation and some areas of exposed ground.

Its construction dates back to the 17th century, and a miracle is said to have led to the first chapel built there. When attacked by a serpent, the landowner Baltazar de Abreu Cardoso prayed to Our Lady to save him. When a lizard appeared to “fight” the snake, he managed to escape; grateful for the miracle, he built a small chapel on the site dedicated to Our Lady (which was later renovated several times and, since 2016, has become the Basilica Sanctuary of Penha).

Another miracle is said to have driven the construction of its staircase in 1819. In 1817, a couple reportedly climbed up to Penha to ask the patron saint for a child; the baby came the following year, and the couple, in gratitude, had the stairs built, which have 382 steps and not 365, as many think.

Altar adorned with religious elements, symmetrical and majestic.Image description: This is a photograph of an altar adorned with religious elements. The image shows a symmetrical composition, with elaborate details in gold and blue. On the left side, we see small angels in dynamic poses, followed by a complex architectural structure that extends toward the center. In the center, there is a centered figure, representing a sacred figure, surrounded by golden rays extending outward. On the right, we find more angels in varied poses, complementing the symmetry of the piece. The background is composed of ornamental details in gold and blue, creating a rich and majestic setting.

All these stories give great religious importance to those who climb the steps to fulfill vows and attend Mass. As for cultural importance, that comes from its traditional festival, one of the oldest and most popular in Rio. Until the 1920s, it was at the Penha festival that samba composers premiered their new songs. This was the "thermometer" that determined whether a samba would be a hit at the following year's carnival. Thus, great names of samba, such as Donga, Pixinguinha, and Cartola, were regular attendees of the Penha festival.

The hundreds of pilgrims who attended the morning religious ceremonies would also enjoy the “secular” part, which took place in the afternoon on every weekend in October.

Elevated church with a stone staircase and light-colored facade.Image description: This is a photograph of a church located on elevated ground, with a stone staircase leading to the main entrance. The church has a light-colored, detailed façade, with traditional architectural elements, including side towers and crosses on the roof. The sky is blue with a few scattered clouds. On the left, there is a metal fence marking off access to the church. In the lower part of the image, we see a wide, well-lit staircase, with a safety rope attached to an iron post.

Even without the cultural weight of the old days, the festival still happens, following the same model: religious ceremonies in the morning and popular festivities in the afternoon. The view from the top of the cliff is a spectacle in itself. From up there, you can see several parts of the city, and for that reason alone, the visit is already worth it!
