Better known as "lazer" (leisure area) by neighborhood residents, the space was closed for approximately 17 months for construction work on the Morro do Pinto reservoir, the third largest in the city with a storage capacity of up to 15 thousand cubic meters of water, which supplies the entire Porto Maravilha. In December 2013, after its restructuring, the site was reopened offering new spaces, such as a multi-sport court, walking and running track, children's playground equipment, an outdoor gym for seniors, among other amenities, once again bringing a leisure area for residents to enjoy and have fun in.

Although he never lived in Morro do Pinto, the park's name pays tribute to Brazilian writer Machado de Assis, who was born and lived in Morro do Livramento, located between the hills of Providência and Conceição, also in Rio's port area.

Currently, the area is not widely used by local residents and has many structural problems. According to one resident, the place is good for taking children and relaxing. "It's a really nice place," she said. Another resident, however, reported that despite being a good space, it is currently in terrible condition for use. "The court has a lot of holes, broken fences, lack of lighting at night, it's a lot of neglect," she stated.
The park is open 24 hours a day and admission is free for visitors.
