In the 19th century, what is now Praça Mauá was known as the "lago da prainha" or "praça da prainha" and had a beach. It was only in the 20th century that the construction of a new pier was undertaken.
In 1910, the square was inaugurated to honor the Barão de Mauá, who had become a viscount, developing the region with activities linked to the port. Also in honor of the Barão de Mauá, they placed his 8.5-meter-tall statue in the middle of the square.

Between 1950 and 1970, the Elevado Perimetral (viaduct) was built, aiming to ease travel between the city's south zone and other regions of Rio de Janeiro. It ended up devaluing the entire area.

In 2014, the Perimetral overpass was demolished, bringing back the area's classic landscape. After 4 years of urbanization works, the square was reopened, hosting various free cultural events ever since.

Praça Mauá is one of the main squares in the city of Rio de Janeiro, located in the downtown neighborhood. It was revitalized as part of the Porto Maravilha project, in which they built the Museu de Artes do Rio (MAR), the Museu do Amanhã, the Arsenal da Marinha, and the Terminal marítimo for passengers at Píer Mauá; there is also the first skyscraper in Latin America.
