Rio Memórias

One of the city's most glamorous amusements, between the 1960s and 1970s, were the toboggan slides. One of them was located where Parque da Catacumba stands today, on the shores of the Rodrigo de Freitas lagoon, facing the Catacumba favela. Photos from that time illustrate the great contrast that has always haunted the carioca spirit: snapshots of people slipping down the enormous slide for fun, standing out against a backdrop of tightly packed shacks. Today, on the site of the old Lagoa toboggan slide, there is a gas station.

Elevated-platform slide with colorful hanging flags.Image description: This is a photograph of a water slide. From left to right, we see a raised platform with a white barrier. As we move to the right, we see several colorful flags hanging in the air, including red, blue, and yellow ones. The sky is clear and blue, standing out against the colors of the flags.
