Founded on January 2, 1838, the Arquivo Nacional (AN) is the institution responsible for the management, preservation, and dissemination of the documentary heritage of the Brazilian State. Originally created as the "Arquivo Público do Império" ("Public Archive of the Empire"), its mission is to ensure access to information and serve as the main source for the reconstruction of Brazil's political, social, and administrative history, from the colonial period to the present day.
The Arquivo Nacional occupies one of the most significant architectural complexes in Rio de Janeiro, located in Praça da República (Campo de Santana). The headquarters building is the former Casa da Moeda palace, an imposing neoclassical construction dating from the 19th century.
Campo de Santana, where the building stands, is sacred ground in Brazilian history. It was there that D. Pedro I was acclaimed Emperor in 1822 and where, in 1889, Marshal Deodoro da Fonseca proclaimed the Republic. The AN building, with its imposing columns and inner courtyards, had already housed several institutions before becoming the definitive home for the nation's documents in 1985, symbolizing the transition from the administration of money (the Mint) to the administration of memory.
The Arquivo Nacional holds kilometers of documents that are fundamental to Brazilian identity. Its collection is made up of papers, maps, photographs, films, and sound recordings that include:
The Golden Law: The original document that abolished slavery in Brazil in 1888. Brazilian Constitutions: All the original charters that governed the country. Records of the Minas Gerais Conspiracy: Documents narrating the uprising led by Tiradentes and his companions. Immigration Records: Millions of names of immigrants who arrived at Brazilian ports in the 19th and 20th centuries, serving as an essential source for genealogical research.
Beyond its safeguarding role, the AN is a vibrant research center, frequented by historians and citizens seeking proof of citizenship, property rights, or simply a reconnection with their family roots.
