Rio, Cidade Febril

CURADORIA

Heloisa Murgel Starling

Inspired by the work of historian Sidney Chalhoub, the gallery Rio, Cidade Febril narrates how the city reacted – and continues to react – to the different waves and epidemic outbreaks throughout its history: from the recurring epidemics of yellow fever and smallpox in the 19th century to the dreaded – and so stigmatized – Aids epidemic, passing through the Revolta da Vacina, the consolidation of the Fundação Oswaldo Cruz, the arrival of the Spanish flu and, of course, the recent covid-19 pandemic. The history is told not only from the point of view of the diseases and their cures, but also how the state and the population faced each of them and the social and cultural marks that were engraved in the memory and history of the city.

Estigmas epidêmicos

Epidemics impact cities and society in different ways. Some diseases come accompanied by a sharp social stigma and a veil of prejudice and ignorance covers the knowledge about these ills. In Rio de Janeiro, history was no different, carriers of syphilis, AIDS, and leprosy suffered in their "skin" the stigmas of the diseases they carried.
