Rio Memórias

This church has so much history... it is where the History of Brazil, of Rio, and the stories of so many couples who got married there and had their children baptized all intersect. Let's start with the "big" historical narrative... but we also want to know your story: did you get married, do you know someone who got married, or was baptized in the Igreja do Outeiro da Glória? Tag it here!!! Good memories will come!

It was on the hill where the Church is located that the Portuguese victory over the French took place in the Battle of Uruçu-Mirim, during which Estácio de Sá, the founder of our city, was mortally wounded by a poisoned arrow shot by the Tamoios, allies of the French.

The site was known as Morro do Leripe, located in the Chácara do Oriente, which belonged to Cláudio Amaral and was donated to Nossa Senhora in 1699. The purpose of the donation was to build a permanent chapel in place of the wood-and-clay one that stood there, and so that the donor and his descendants could be buried in it.

On the left side, there is a large building with several windows and a sloped roof. In front of it, there is a staircase that descends to the water. In the center, there is a densely wooded area with tall, thick trees. On the right, there are more, smaller buildings, also with sloped roofs. In the background, there is a row of houses and buildings extending along the hillside. In the lower part of the image, there is a prominent rock in the foreground.

Construction of the Church was completed in 1739, but it gained prestige with the arrival of the Portuguese Court in 1808. The Royal Family had a special fondness for it: in the church, the first daughter of dom Pedro I and dona Leopoldina, princess Maria da Glória, future queen dona Maria II of Portugal, was baptized in 1819. From then on, all members of the Imperial Family were baptized in the Igreja da Glória, including dom Pedro II and princess Isabel. In 1839, dom Pedro II granted the title of "imperial" to the brotherhood, which became known, from then on, as the "Imperial Irmandade da Nossa Senhora da Glória do Outeiro". During the government of Getúlio Vargas, it was declared a "National Monument" and listed as a heritage site by IPHAN in 1938.

Coastal landscape with a city on a cliff, green mountain, religious building, red houses, sea with waves, and canoe.Image description: This is a painting depicting a coastal landscape with a city built on a cliff. On the left side, we see a mountain covered in green vegetation. In the center, there is a large building with towers and domes, possibly a church or religious building. On the right, there are several houses and smaller buildings, also with red roofs. In the lower part of the image, we see the sea with waves and some rocks by the shore. A man is leading a horse along the beach. In the water, there is a canoe with people aboard. The sky is cloudy, and some birds are flying in the air.
