O Paiz played a prominent role in Brazilian thinking at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Founded in 1884, it had Rui Barbosa as its first editor-in-chief, later replaced by Quintino Bocaiúva, one of the founders of the Republican Party. The newspaper championed the abolitionist and republican campaigns and was at the center of a series of controversies. It stopped circulating in 1930, after a fire at its headquarters. In 1934, it reappeared on newsstands, but only for a short time.

Neoclassical building on a corner with a leafless tree.Image description: The image is an old black-and-white photograph. It shows a large building with neoclassical architecture, located on a corner. On the left side, we see a busy street with people walking and parked cars. On the right, there is a leafless tree, which appears to be at the center of the image. In the background, the building has several windows and ornamental details. The top of the building features a dome covered by construction structures. At the top, there is a small tower with a pointed element.
