Rio Memórias

The Maciço da Pedra Branca rises as one of the largest geomorphological structures in the municipality of Rio de Janeiro, its rocky composition revealing a geological history that dates back to a past 600 million years ago. It is a rock formation predominantly composed of granite, shaped over the course of tectonic cycles that consolidated the foundations of the present-day relief of Rio. This base, marked by fractures and faults, forms the backbone of a territory where the landforms directly express the resistance and orientation of the rocks that sustain them.

Unlike an abrupt, vertiginous massif such as Tijuca's, Pedra Branca unfolds into gentle domes and elongated ridges, a broader, undulating relief that is no less imposing. Its highest point — Pico da Pedra Branca, at 1,024 meters — rises on the city's highest plateau. The massif's structure reveals the work of differential erosion, where more resistant rocks preserve the higher elevations, while fractures and other zones of structural weakness allowed drainage networks to become embedded and slopes to retreat.

The topographic features of the massif largely follow the orientation of the geological lineaments that cut across the substrate in preferential directions, such as NE-SW and E-W, reflecting the tectonic events that shaped the Atlantic edge of the southeastern region. This arrangement conditions both the internal compartmentalization of the massif and the organization of its drainages, which frequently take on rectangular patterns, flowing into the lowland areas that surround it.

Some sugarloaf-shaped hills stand out on their southeastern side, facing the lowlands of Jacarepaguá and Vargens, with particular emphasis on Morro dos Dois Irmãos da Taquara – Rio de Janeiro's new postcard image.

The image shows a natural landscape with an imposing mountain in the center, covered in green vegetation. On the left side, there is a dry tree and a power line cutting across the scene. In the foreground, there is a protective wall with metal railings. On the right, there is a light structure and more vegetation. The sky is clear blue, with no clouds.

South of the main massif, the Serra de Guaratiba stands out with its nearly north-south alignment. With more modest elevations — ranging between 100 and 400 meters — this mountain range reaches the coastline, backing beach arcs protected by conservation units. Its rock composition bears similarities to the main body of the Pedra Branca, but its rounded shapes and the spacing between ridges create an elongated landscape distinct from the main body of the Massif.

From left to right, we see a series of mountains covered in green vegetation. In the center, there is a densely populated area with houses and buildings, interspersed with green spaces and a small lake. To the right, farther away, there is a stretch of land with sparser vegetation. The sky is light blue with a few scattered white clouds.

The surroundings of the mountain formations of the Maciço da Pedra Branca are, as with the others, encircled by more recent formations of the coastal plain, where marine and fluvial sediments overlap, forming extensive lowlands, where meadows, marshes, and sandbank vegetation spread out. The line of contact between these two geomorphological domains is marked by an abrupt break in the landscape, where distinct domains of hydrological and ecosystemic functionality meet. There, the relief comes to a halt, and only sedimentary remains make up a scene of transition between distinct geological eras.

From the foreground to the background, we see a series of green hills covered by dense vegetation. As we move further back, the mountain peaks become more distant and less detailed. The horizon is filled with other, smaller peaks, forming an expansive and majestic landscape.

The Maciço da Pedra Branca, with its resistant rocky mass and its mountain range alignments, not only structures the morphology of Rio's West Zone — it silently tells the ancient history of hidden territories of the Sertão Carioca down to the ephemeral nature of the contemporary city. Agriculture, charcoal, former enslaved people, and caiçaras left their marks on this landscape.
