Introduction to the São Cristóvão neighborhood

São Cristóvão is a neighborhood that blends, in its architecture, an old and modern look, thanks to its history as one of Rio's most traditional neighborhoods and its importance to this day. With a privileged location and easy access to several regions, the neighborhood has a great variety of buses and train and subway stations. Because of this, besides being historic, São Cristóvão has become a well-structured neighborhood. The São Cristóvão train station was opened in 1858, as part of the Estrada de Ferro Dom Pedro II. Over the years, it underwent many renovations, the last one in 2016 due to the Olympic Games.

Besides being an important means of transportation for cariocas, trains also serve the function of promoting integration among the other transit systems, contributing to the coordination of activities and citizens' movement.

Other facts about São Cristóvão station

The carelessness of some passengers and the terrible conditions of some SuperVia stations often lead to several accidents, such as the one on 02/27/2019, when an accident occurred near the São Cristóvão station: two trains collided and nine people were injured, including the train driver. According to the newspaper "O Dia," the accident was caused because a train that was stopped due to technical problems failed to inform traffic control, resulting in the collision with another train.

Fun Facts

In São Cristóvão you can also find the old Imperial Station, which was built especially for the royal family's use in 1858. The yellow building, which is now poorly preserved and lacks the necessary maintenance, is listed as a heritage site by the Instituto Rio Patrimônio da Humanidade. However, according to a 2019 report by BandNews, the old Imperial Station has become a parking lot, and some street vendors use it to store their goods.

Interviews

We interviewed 3 people to learn about the importance of the train in the lives of Rio de Janeiro residents:

Joseane and Thiago Have worked for 1 year and 4 months in the cleaning sector of the São Cristóvão station;

Yasmin Has worked at a snack bar in the station for 1 year.

What would you like to share about the trains?

Joseane and Thiago: Acts of vandalism and even robberies are constantly witnessed at the station and on the trains by both of them.

Yasmin: Just like Joseane and Thiago, she witnessed acts of vandalism and robberies; in addition, she was a victim of and witnessed sexual harassment against women.

Do you think the train is an important means of transportation?

Joseane: Yes, I consider it one of the best means of transportation for people who live far away and need to get to work or reach downtown.

Yasmin: Yes, it's an important means of transportation for those who live far away, and also one of the fastest and most efficient, but the constant delays are downsides. I think it's cool that many people make their living from working on the trains, like street vendors and peddlers.
