Known as E.F. Central do Brasil from 1889 onward, it was initially the primary line to be built by the E.F. Dom Pedro II. Once considered the primordial line for the operation of its entire system, it is still, nowadays, a very important line connecting the Deodoro, Japeri, Belford Roxo, Santa Cruz, and Saracuruna stations. Today we'll talk about the Deodoro station.

Named Sapopemba station, it was inaugurated in 1859. From it departed the Mangaratiba Branch, formerly called the Angra Branch, which passes through the Vila Militar in Realengo. In 1879, the Centro line had 22 km of double track, which ended exactly at this station.

Below, it reads "NOTHING HAS CHANGED" in large letters. Next is "LET'S CHANGE" with emphasis on "CHANGE". The phrase "MARCH AGAINST THE FARCE OF ABOLITION" appears below, highlighting participation. In the background, there are images of people in different situations, possibly related to the history of the abolition of slavery. At the bottom, it reads "TAKE PART MAY 11 - 4 PM - CANDELÁRIA BLACK MOVEMENT - RJ".

Still at the beginning of the century, in honor of the proclaimer of the Brazilian Republic, the line came to be called Deodoro. On September 26, 1907, the newspaper O Estado de S. Paulo published the following news item: "Dr. Aarão Reis, director of the Estrada de Ferro Central do Brasil, will change the name of the Sapopemba station to Marechal Deodoro, on the occasion of the inauguration of the works at Villa Militar".

As early as 1935, on June 21, a massive railway accident occurred, resulting in deaths among passenger trains. Besides this accident, others occurred in the years 1897 and 1921, 1923, 1934, 1936, 1941, and 1959.

In the photo on the left, we see a partially visible train with people standing beside it. In the photo on the right, we also see a train, but with more people standing around it. Both images appear to have been taken in an open area, likely near the station mentioned in the text.

Nowadays the station building doesn't look the same; with the passage of time and so many renovations, the building seems more lifeless than in the 1908 photograph.

Deodoro, which has always been a transfer point, with all the changes over time, nowadays we have the possibility of transferring both to the line that goes to Santa Cruz, as well as to Japeri and Paracambi.

The Deodoro Sports Complex was initially created for the Brazilian army and operated as a military circuit; it was acquired in 2005 and hosted the Equestrian, Modern Pentathlon, Shooting, Hockey and Archery events. In 2007, when the Pan American Games were held there, it was renamed Complexo Esportivo de Deodoro. Right after the games ended, it became open for public use. The venue was renovated in 2010 for the modern pentathlon at the 2016 Olympic Games, gaining the new name "Modern Pentathlon Park". An interesting fact is that the seeds the athletes brought to the opening ceremony of the 2016 Olympic Games were planted in this very park.

At the 2016 Olympic Games, SuperVia joined forces with the State Government to restructure Deodoro station, one of the last six Olympic stations that helped transport passengers and spectators to the Olympic and Paralympic Games. One of our memories came through Vanessa's uncle, who, as a big sports fan, took the opportunity of the station's renovation to check out the improvements and watch the Olympic Games at the Complexo Esportivo de Deodoro. He reported that he liked the improvements made to the station and said they contributed a lot to bringing a larger audience to the games in greater comfort.

One of the group's members, Giovanna, has an emotional memory tied to the place because when she was younger, her mother used to take her to a salon there in Deodoro, and they would have a spa day together, and this is something that really stuck with her because while she waited for her mother, she would read magazines, chat. And this salon was located across from the Deodoro piscinão, so that left a strong impression when it comes to remembering the place.

Another memory of Giovanna's, involving the Sports Complex, was when she and her friend planned to go for a swim in the Olympic pool in the park; it was very hot, and they brought almost their whole house's worth of food and drinks, really expecting to spend the day at the pool enjoying the treats they'd brought. When they got there, they found a completely packed pool with very dirty water — when the park was opened to the public, the government neglected it a lot and stopped keeping up regular maintenance, which explained the color of the water. At the time, the two of them laughed and avoided going in, spending the day having fun there but with no contact at all with that filthy water. Today, the two of them have a good laugh about this story.
