Founded on January 2, 1838, the Arquivo Nacional (AN) is the institution responsible for the management, preservation, and dissemination of the documentary heritage of the Brazilian State. Originally created as the "Arquivo Público do Império" ("Public Archive of the Empire"), its mission is to ensure access to information and serve as the main source for the reconstruction of Brazil's political, social, and administrative history, from the colonial period to the present day.

Old building with "ARCHIVO PUBLICO" on the facade, arches and smaller windows to the left, "JANERO" sign in the center, large rectangular windows to the right.Image description: The image is an old black-and-white photograph of a building with the inscription "ARCHIVO PUBLICO" on the facade. The spatial layout begins on the left, where we see a series of arches and smaller windows. In the center, there is a sign with a figure and the name "JANERO". On the right, the main facade displays large rectangular windows and a sign with the same inscription "ARCHIVO PUBLICO". In the background, part of another building is visible. In the foreground, there are people walking and a post with a sign.

The Arquivo Nacional occupies one of the most significant architectural complexes in Rio de Janeiro, located in Praça da República (Campo de Santana). The headquarters building is the former Casa da Moeda palace, an imposing neoclassical construction dating from the 19th century.

Historic Arquivo Nacional building with garden and trees.Image description: This is a photograph of a historic building called Arquivo Nacional. The image shows a front view of the building, with trees and a garden in the foreground. On the left side, there is a large tree with green leaves. In the center, there is a small pond with a water fountain statue. On the right, there are more trees and green bushes. The building has several windows and classical columns. At the top of the building, there is the text "ARQUIVO NACIONAL" in large letters.

Campo de Santana, where the building stands, is sacred ground in Brazilian history. It was there that D. Pedro I was acclaimed Emperor in 1822 and where, in 1889, Marshal Deodoro da Fonseca proclaimed the Republic. The AN building, with its imposing columns and inner courtyards, had already housed several institutions before becoming the definitive home for the nation's documents in 1985, symbolizing the transition from the administration of money (the Mint) to the administration of memory.

Classic black-and-white building, Rio de Janeiro, carriage and palm trees.Image description: This is a historic black-and-white photograph of a classical building located in Rio de Janeiro. On the left side, we see a street with a horse-drawn carriage, in which people are seated. In front of the building, there are tall palm trees. The main building is large, with columns and evenly spaced windows, and has a low wall in front of it. On the right, there is a water tank. In the lower left corner is written "Editores & propriedade de Rodrigues & Co. Quidor 57. Rio de Janeiro." In the lower center, it reads "Casa da Moeda La Monnaie".

The Arquivo Nacional holds kilometers of documents that are fundamental to Brazilian identity. Its collection is made up of papers, maps, photographs, films, and sound recordings that include:

The Golden Law: The original document that abolished slavery in Brazil in 1888. Brazilian Constitutions: All the original charters that governed the country. Records of the Minas Gerais Conspiracy: Documents narrating the uprising led by Tiradentes and his companions. Immigration Records: Millions of names of immigrants who arrived at Brazilian ports in the 19th and 20th centuries, serving as an essential source for genealogical research.

Beyond its safeguarding role, the AN is a vibrant research center, frequented by historians and citizens seeking proof of citizenship, property rights, or simply a reconnection with their family roots.
