Founded in 1567, just two years after the city itself was founded, the Arquivo Geral da Cidade do Rio de Janeiro (AGCRJ) is the oldest municipal archival institution in Brazil. Originally created to store the "Posturas Municipais" and the records of the City Council, the Archive evolved from a simple administrative repository into one of the country's most important centers of historical research, serving as the official guardian of the entire administrative and social trajectory of Rio de Janeiro's capital.
Since 1980, the Archive has been headquartered in an imposing building in Cidade Nova, a region that carries deep layers of Rio's history. Originally an area of marshland (the old Mangue), Cidade Nova was filled in during the 19th century to allow for urban expansion. The neighborhood became the birthplace of samba and modern carnival (the "Setor 1" of the samba parade grounds) and later established itself as the city government's administrative center.
Occupying a building that blends technical functionality with the grandeur of a palace of memory, the AGCRJ is strategically located near the Sambódromo and the Centro Administrativo São Sebastião (CASS). This location reflects Rio's transition from a colonial city to a modern metropolis, serving as a bridge between the decisions of the present and the records of the past.
The General Archive's collection is vast and diverse, covering nearly 460 years of history. Among its treasures, the following stand out:
City Council Minutes: Records dating back to the 16th century, chronicling the city's daily life and growth since its earliest years. Map and Blueprint Collection: Thousands of cartographic records showing Rio's urban evolution, including plans for famous reforms such as those by Pereira Passos. Photographic Archive: Millions of images capturing the transformations of the streets, beaches, and people of Rio over the course of the 20th century. Specialized Library: A rich collection focused on the history of Rio de Janeiro, available for public consultation.
Beyond its technical function of custody, the Archive acts as a vibrant cultural facility, promoting exhibitions, book launches, lectures, and guided tours that bring citizens closer to the historical wealth stored on its shelves.
