Rio na Independência

CURADORIA

Heloisa Murgel Starling

The independence of Brazil does not fit into September 7, 1822. Much less in the scene imagined by Pedro Américo more than six decades later, in the well-known painting Independence or Death, commissioned to feature prominently in the Ipiranga Monument. No matter how much one tries, no date is capable of enclosing the entire process of which it is itself a part. Even more so when it comes to the emancipation of a country. This is the history that the gallery “Rio, the streets and Independence” tells, having as its backdrop the political landscape of a city that, since the arrival of the royal family in 1808, has been, over the years, fabricated as the imperial capital.
