Before anything else, it is important to understand the formation of the Madureira neighborhood, where the Viaduto Negrão de Lima is located.

Local market under a viaduct with red tables and colorful stalls.Image description: This is a photograph of a market located under a viaduct. The image shows an open area with red tables and chairs arranged in rows. On the left, we see tables with objects and people sitting. In the center, there is a large tree and a yellow stall with a blue cover. On the right, more colorful stalls are arranged. The viaduct above has the name "VIADUTO NEGRÃO DE LIMA" written in large letters. The setting appears to be on a sunny day, with shadows cast by the viaduct.

Madureira is a very popular neighborhood in the Zona Norte of the municipality of Rio de Janeiro, known as the "Capital do Subúrbio" ("Suburb Capital"), "Coração da Zona Norte" ("Heart of the Zona Norte"), and "Berço do Samba" ("Cradle of Samba"). It is fundamental to the city's culture and economy and stands out due to its size, of almost four hundred hectares.

THE CHARME BALL

Charme dances and their manifestations originate in Rio's north zone. The term "Charme" was coined by DJ Corello at a dance at the Mackenzie club in the 1980s. At a dance at Mackenzie, in the Méier neighborhood, Corello invites: "It's time for a little charme, move your body real slow." This "charminho" story stuck in people's minds and they started saying: "now I'm going to the charminho, I'm going to listen to some charme, I'm going to Corello's place where there'll be charme"

Nighttime dance party with lively dances and vivid colors.Image description: This is a photograph of a nighttime dance party. On the left, we see people dancing in an area lit by palm-frond lights. In the center, a man dressed in camouflage pants and a white t-shirt dances energetically. To his right, a woman in a white dress is also dancing. In the background, there are more people dancing and a white building. The image is in vivid colors, with the green of the palm fronds and the white of the participants' outfits standing out.

With a loyal audience, the dances held there are sought out not only by those who want to hear R&B and its variations, but also by notable dancers who compete for space on the dance floor.

In 2013, mayor Eduardo Paes declared, in the Official Gazette, the Baile Charme do Viaduto de Madureira an "Intangible Cultural Heritage" of the city of Rio de Janeiro.

TESTIMONIALS

Shirlei Da Silva, 37 years old - Before attending the famous Baile Charme, I used to go to one called "Tem Tudo" that took place right in front of Baile Charme, but when it ended, I started going to Baile Charme. Back then it was so peaceful! There was no fighting, it was great, I enjoyed it so much that I would only leave at dawn! I went a lot to dance and enjoy the good times, and it was actually there that I learned to dance well. Good times I lived through.

Gabrielly Bispo, 18 years old - I started going to Baile Charme in 2016, quite a while ago now! I can't quite describe how good I felt when I took my first steps there, it was one of the best feelings of my life! I met incredible people, and I even met my son's father there! I lived through so many welcoming moments with the people I love. These are memories I will never forget, I will keep them in my heart forever. The atmosphere is so wonderful, it embraces you so much and makes you never want to leave, it's such a togetherness.

If you're into this kind of event, I highly recommend going! And even for those who don't know it or don't like it, I can tell you that in no time you'll already feel that "I want more" craving!

FINAL CONSIDERATIONS

Throughout this work, we discuss our research on Madureira and the Baile Charme, along with testimonials related to participation in this cultural event. We sought to reflect on the origin of Charme, as well as its importance to those who attend it. We concluded that the value of Charme for the neighborhood of Madureira, beyond the dance floors, involves the appreciation of black culture and black identity, with its styles and music, representing a great cultural richness.
