This work refers to the study and documentation of a historic site in the neighborhood of Madureira. The goal is to provide simple, concise information about one of the most well-known—and at the same time least known—places in Madureira. Even though almost no one notices it, Estação de Madureira has great importance in the neighborhood's history.
A bit of history
Madureira is a very popular neighborhood in the Zona Norte of Rio de Janeiro, also known as the "Capital of the Suburbs," "Heart of the Zona Norte," and "Cradle of Samba."
Founded on May 24, 1613, the neighborhood is famous for being home to two major samba schools, as well as having the largest popular market in Brazil and the city's third-largest park (Parque Madureira, which covers an area of 160,000 square meters).
It stands out due to a wide range of bus lines and train routes that lead to several neighborhoods of Rio de Janeiro; its huge variety of commercial establishments; and also its population, as the neighborhood is made up of people from diverse ethnicities. The presence of Black culture is quite noticeable in the region, and there are also many migrants, coming mainly from Brazil's Northeast Region, as well as workers from other neighborhoods, who swell the workforce and contribute to a portion of the city's gross domestic product.
The neighborhood's commerce includes several stores, shopping arcades, Madureira Shopping Rio, Shopping São Luiz, and various street shops. It is one of the city's largest commercial hubs, attracting people from different neighborhoods of the city in search of products and services.
Estação de Madureira
Inaugurated on June 15, 1890, it is one of the main railway stations in the Rio suburbs. It connects Madureira to other neighborhoods in the Zona Norte and also to Downtown, the West Zone, Baixada Fluminense, Niterói, and São Gonçalo. Until 1890, trains only went as far as Cascadura and back to the Campo de Sant’Anna station.

After its founding, residents and merchants began using the station as one of the main means of transportation, with shoppers coming from residential areas to the neighborhood, which greatly increased the flow of customers, bringing improvements to the neighborhood.
But since not everything is rosy, the station has also been the stage for severe calamities: derailments, suicides, malfunctions, and other problems remain issues that exist in the station to this day, and despite the authorities' efforts to reduce these problems, there are still certain blind spots they have not managed to resolve.

The station continues to serve as a major support to the Madureira neighborhood, helping the flow of people from various neighborhoods. Even without drawing much attention, the Estação de Madureira deserves a place of prominence in the neighborhood's history, as its existence facilitates the circulation of diversity.
It is important to remember that the history of a place is also shaped by what allows us to reach it.
