Portela samba school with an eagle and colorfully dressed people.Image description: This is a black and white photograph of a Portela samba school. In the background, there is a drawing of an eagle with open wings, holding a banner that reads "G.R.E.S. Portela." In front, six people are seated in a straight line, looking to the right. They are all wearing colorful clothing, with details in shades of green, yellow, and white.

FIRST STEP: Choosing the Parade Theme.

Around the month of July, a contest is held to choose the theme for the samba school's parade.

It's a moment of intense dispute. As in any organization, there's always a more conservative group and a more progressive one. The choice is preceded by a great deal of discussion and provocation.

Once the theme is chosen, the samba school begins working on the Samba Enredo.

SECOND STEP: Research and data collection.

THE INTERNET brought many conveniences for gathering data on the Parade Theme.

In the past, there were only Public Libraries for doing research and gathering data. When the topic is related to History, it's even possible to find a lot of data in public libraries, but when the topic refers to indigenous communities, folklore, and other specific subjects, it becomes difficult to find reliable and realistic data.

Several groups go out researching and gathering data on the theme, and each group composes its own proposal for the Samba Enredo.

Sambódromo with "GRESPORTELA" sign and blue bird statue.Image description: The image is a photograph of a sambadrome. In the center, there is a sign with the name "GRESPORTELA" written in white letters on a blue background. Above the sign, there is a statue of a blue bird, also prominently displayed. The sign is positioned on a structure with radial blue and white stripes, forming a radial pattern. At the bottom of the image, there is a circular logo with the same blue bird and the text "GRESPORTELA" in blue. The sky in the background is light blue.

THIRD STEP: Convincing the community

Once again, surrounded by great debates and controversies, the choice of the Samba Enredo is made.

The lyrics, the rhythm, the cadence, the evolution, and many other factors must be taken into consideration to have a GOOD Samba Enredo. After all, it's the Samba Enredo that will motivate, spark, spread the joy, convey the message, and mark, in people's minds, the passage of the samba school.

Based on the same theme, several authors present, justify, and defend their

Samba-Enredos.

Once the Samba Enredo has been chosen, the school begins working on making the costumes, the accessories and the float cars.

FOURTH STEP: The Wings.

The Alas represent the chapters of the story that the samba school tells the spectators along the avenue.

There should be a logical thread running through the sequence of wings. Generally, this thread is chronological, that is, it begins telling the story at the beginning of time and then goes on to recount what happened over time.

In each wing, the paraders must wear a costume that represents the Wing and may carry Floats.

The wing can have its own choreography, which of course cannot clash with the overall choreography. The choreography can dictate the progression and show how the wing will occupy the space on the avenue.

Samba school in a nighttime parade with a blue and white parrot.Image description: The image is a photograph of a samba school during a nighttime parade. In the foreground, there is a large parrot with blue and white feathers, featuring metallic, glowing details. In the background, a crowd of people follows the parade. Most of the participants are dressed in white suits and white hats, while some wear blue suits with white bands on their sleeves. Everyone appears to be in motion, possibly dancing or walking in formation.

Until 1930, costumes were simple, made from adapted clothes, dyed and decorated in a naive way, since the materials that could enrich them, such as fabrics, ornaments, dance shoes, and headpieces, were very expensive, appearing more often in samba school parades. In clubs and street parades, the blocos emerged, where a group of people dressed alike.

The costumes of the samba schools serve to explain the story told in the lyrics of the samba enredo. They must be coherent with the theme and appear in harmony with the school as a whole. The samba school is divided into sections, and each section has a different costume design, which must be respected and followed by all its members.
