One of Rio de Janeiro's postcard landmarks, Pedra da Gávea is the largest seaside monolith (a rock of great proportions, or a single block of stone) in the world. With an altitude of over 842 meters, the rock served as a major landmark for the navigators who arrived in Rio, so much so that it was one of the first mountains in Brazil to receive a Portuguese name.

Captain Gaspar de Lemos's expedition in the 16th century recognized, in the silhouette of the rock, the shape of a crow's nest, which is used at the highest part of a ship's mast for observation.

It shows a sailor on a raised platform, looking out at the horizon through a telescope. The sailor is wearing a heavy coat and holding a signal flag. The platform is fixed to a ship's mast, with ropes and cables hanging from it. The sky is filled with clouds, and birds fly in the background. In the lower corner, there is an inscription that reads "I. Scoresbys huma."

Pedra da Gávea is located in Floresta da Tijuca, under the administration of Tijuca National Park. It is one of the trails considered most difficult and challenging in Rio, and for that reason, only in 1830 did the first expeditions to its summit begin to be undertaken.

This is a high-difficulty trail that takes approximately 3h30 of hiking and climbing - quite strenuous. Good physical fitness is recommended, along with plenty of attention, as there are many uneven stretches and exposed vertical sections, where accidents and even deaths have been recorded.

So much effort and exercise are rewarded by one of the most beautiful natural views - a breathtaking 360º. It's absolutely worth it to explore and hike this circuit: Pico dos 4, passing through Garganta do Céu, Platô, Mesa, Orelha, Olhos, Pedra do Raio, Pirâmide, Cabeça do Imperador, Cadeirinha on the way back, passing through the dreaded Carrasqueira and reaching Paredão, with Mirante da Laje just below.

The sky shows shades of light blue, yellow, and pink, with scattered clouds.

The students in the group, who LOVE adventure, talk about their experiences with one of the toughest trails in Rio.

On the left, we see the cave entrance, while on the right, we see the sea and the coastline. The man is standing with his arms extended, wearing a black t-shirt with the white word "ALPHA." He is in a balanced position, supported on his hands. In the background, we see a landscape with a beach, mountains, and distant buildings.

People climbing on a mountain route overlooking the sea.Image description: This is a photograph of a person standing with arms outstretched, apparently on a climbing route. The image shows a mountainous landscape with a clear blue sky and a few clouds. On the left, there is a large rock formation that appears to be part of the climbing route. In the background, on the right, there is a panoramic view of the sea, with turquoise blue water and a distant island. The person is wearing a helmet and a backpack, and is standing on a rock.
