Located in the Ipanema neighborhood, more precisely between the Cantagalo and Pavão-Pavãozinho hills, the Prédio João Goulart has, throughout its history, an educational essence.
Although it was initially built, in the 1960s, with the aim of becoming a hotel, the Panorama Palace Hotel was never opened.
In the 1980s, the Ciep João Goulart was opened at the site, with the purpose of offering full-time education and support to students. At the time, other projects aimed at the population also operated at the site in parallel.
Over the years, despite the many projects that have worked and still work there, responsibility for the building has always rested with the public sector, which, unfortunately, has not provided investment for its proper maintenance. As an example, we have the elevators, which, due to the large flow of people, always have lines, since, of the six elevators that should be available, generally only two work (sometimes, only one). The emergency exit – the stairs – is in terrible condition, worsening the problems in users' movement through the building.

Visitors to the building will find several projects and programs, such as: Viva Rio, Amor e Canto, Academia de Jiu-Jitsu Fernando Tererê, CRJ, among many others.
The MUF – Museu de Favelas – also operates on the site, and it was a pioneer of this model throughout Brazil.
FAETEC, responsible for implementing the public and free Professional and Technological Education policy in the State of Rio de Janeiro, is also part of the building. The school offers vocational and technical courses.
