The History of ISERJ

The Instituto Superior de Educação do Rio de Janeiro (ISERJ) has been educating professionals and teachers for 142 years, through technical and higher education.

Now let's go back to 1880, the year in which the Escola Normal da corte was created and inaugurated, temporarily using the space of Colégio Pedro II. There were several changes regarding the school's location. In its inauguration year, on April 30, it was transferred to the Escola Politécnica, located in Largo de São Francisco de Paula. Eight years later, it moved to the building where Colégio Estadual Rivadavia Correa is currently housed. In 1914, the institution was transferred to Estácio de Sá, now called Escola Pedro Varela.

In 1928, following a public competition promoted by the City Hall of the Federal District - influenced by nationalist movements that had innovative ideas for education - construction began on a building of its own for the institution, on Rua Mariz e Barros. Finally, in 1930, under the administration of Professor Fernando de Azevedo, the school moved to the building where it is currently located.

Historic building in São Paulo with a classic façade and colonial architectural elements.Image description: This is a photograph of a historic building located in São Paulo, Brazil. The image shows a classic façade with architectural elements characteristic of the colonial period. On the left side, we see part of the building with rectangular windows and a main entrance. In the center, there is a decorative tower with a curved roof and ornamental details. On the right, the façade features arches and rounded windows. The building is surrounded by green trees, and in front there is a metal fence. In the upper right corner, a traffic sign with the letter "E" can be seen.

On March 19, ISERJ became an Institute of Education, and in 1946 it came under the authority of the Secretaria Geral de Educação e Cultura do Distrito Federal, leading to the creation of continuing education courses.

Only in 1997 did the school receive the name Instituto Superior de Educação do Rio de Janeiro, thanks to law nº 9.394/1996 (Lei de Diretrizes e Bases da Educação Nacional).

It is worth highlighting the figure of Anísio Teixeira (1900-1971), who held the position of Director of Public Instruction in 1931 and reformed education, seeking to establish a dignified and integrated public education system. In 1932, based on a document called the Manifesto of the Pioneers, Teixeira advocated for public, free, secular, and compulsory education. His main works are "Educação não é privilégio," "Educação para a democracia," and "Universidade e a Liberdade humana."

Man in a classic suit, thin-rimmed glasses, blurred background.Image description: This is a black-and-white photograph of a man. He is wearing a classic suit with a white shirt and a bow tie. His head is slightly tilted forward, and he wears glasses with thin frames. The background is blurred, suggesting an indoor room.

Why did we choose this location?

Gabriela, one of the group's members, thought of ISERJ, since, besides having already visited the place with her mother, it's where her brother studies. He says he admires the quality of the teaching (which was also highlighted by other students) and the structure of the place; he likes the lunch and the events that happen there.

When we arrived at the institute, the first thing we noticed and were impressed by was the architecture (with strong colonial influence), truly enchanting. Next, our attention was drawn to the students' uniforms, because they have a different standard from the other FAETECs.

Acknowledgments

We would like to give special thanks to the staff and management of ISERJ, who welcomed us very warmly and gave us all the attention and assistance we needed, as much as possible.

We would also like to thank you for the opportunity to be part of this project, which presented us with a completely different and special challenge, one that will be recorded in a museum. And we congratulate you for including public school students in spaces like this, something we could never have imagined being part of.
