Nise da Silveira
Nise da Silveira was born in Maceió in 1905. She was the only daughter of a teacher and journalist and a pianist, which gave her a childhood full of freedom, music, art, and education.
She studied the areas of neurology and psychiatry, and began working as a psychiatrist. During Getúlio Vargas's government, there was a lot of persecution of PCB members and of intellectuals, writers, and artists. Nise was arrested twice during that period. She had to flee and lived in Bahia for eight years as a fugitive.
Some time later, Nise managed to return to work at the Pedro Segundo psychiatric hospital, where she dealt with the “medicine” of the time. She began to disagree with the way things were done and started looking for new methods of treatment. Nise revolutionized psychiatry, exposing new therapy methods that included artistic expression.

Suburban Madness
The carnival street group Loucura Suburbana emerges, then, as a means of bringing people together in the fight against psychological prejudice.
Created in 2001, as part of the deconstruction process of the asylum model at the Nise da Silveira Municipal Institute, the Bloco Carnavalesco Loucura Suburbana breaks down the walls of the asylum and revives the street carnival of Engenho de Dentro.
