Some say that the Igreja de São Pedro dos Clérigos was the city's greatest baroque jewel. Its curved-form architecture, its interior decorated by the rich woodcarving work of none other than Mestre Valentim, its sumptuous sculptures and frames: there were many details attesting to the precious character of the small church that, today, we can only know through photographs or imagination. Built starting in 1733 and the target of renovations and restorations over time, it is considered a singular project. Its symbolic and architectural importance was so great that it was listed as a heritage site by the historical preservation service. But in vain. The chapel had committed the sin of standing in the path of the future avenida Presidente Vargas, the apple of mayor Henrique Dodsworth's eye. It would then have to be demolished, to make way for the new avenue.

Given its imminent disappearance, there was a great outcry from the faithful, historians and architects. The church then ended up at the center of a somewhat unusual project. The city government wanted to remove it from its site and move it to another plot, making use of a technology considered cutting-edge at the time, which consisted of applying concrete to the base of the walls and transporting the entire structure on wheels, also made of concrete. Neither Brazilian nor foreign experts, however, were able to guarantee the safety of the undertaking. Faced with the impasse, the mayor did not hesitate. With the stroke of a pen, he stripped away the chapel's protection, which ceased to be a historical landmark, and authorized its demolition, which took place in 1944. Before it was torn down, the furniture, window and door frames, artworks, carvings and other pieces of the building were removed from the temple, so that it could be rebuilt in the future. This never happened, and the fragments of what had once been the Igreja de São Pedro dos Clérigos ended up scattered among museums and other temples.
