Located in an elegant mansion that is part of the Architectural Complex of the Palácio do Catete, the Museu de Folclore Edison Carneiro is one of the most important institutions for the preservation of Brazil's popular cultural expressions. Inaugurated in 1968, the museum is the result of the dedication of Brazilian folklorists — such as the historian and ethnologist Edison Carneiro, after whom the institution is named — in documenting and celebrating the identity of the Brazilian people.
Entrada do Museu
The building that houses the museum is an example of neoclassicism and was declared a heritage site by IPHAN in the 1960s. It is part of the complex surrounding the Palácio do Catete, sharing the same historic garden. Situating the Museum of Folklore within this complex is a powerful symbolic gesture: it places the popular expressions of Brazilian culture (often marginalized) on the same physical and historical footing as the nation's official political power.
The museum was founded under Unesco's post-War incentive to protect traditions at risk of disappearing. Currently linked to the Centro Nacional de Folclore e Cultura Popular (CNFCP), the museum has a rich collection of over 17 thousand pieces.
Interior do Museu
The permanent exhibition, titled "Objects and Their Narratives", proposes a contemporary perspective on popular culture. Instead of viewing folklore as something static or belonging to the past, the museum presents culture as an ongoing production created by ordinary people in their daily lives. Visitors will find rooms dedicated to rites of passage, festivals, cordel literature, musical instruments, toys, and folk medicine. The space also features the Popular Artist Room, which hosts temporary exhibitions focused on artisan communities from across the country.
