Rio Memórias

Opened on December 21, 1909, Cine Íris is the oldest movie theater still operating in the city of Rio de Janeiro. A witness to the golden age of Rio's "Cinelândia," the venue has survived the technological and social transformations of the last century, remaining a shrine to early 20th-century architecture and one of the last representatives of the street-front movie palaces.

Festive building with decorated verandas and balconies.Image description: This is an old photograph of a building with festive decorations. On the left side, we see a portion of the building with balconies adorned with garlands of green leaves. On the right, the main building has three floors, with balconies decorated with flags and hanging cords. The second-floor windows are large and rectangular, while those on the third floor have grilles. At the bottom, there is a shop with an open entrance, where people are walking. The lower left corner shows a large tree and a sign with the name "C. Iris."

The cinema is located on Rua da Carioca, in downtown Rio. This street is one of the city's most traditional, connecting Largo da Carioca to Praça Tiradentes. In the early 20th century, the street was the epicenter of Rio's worldly and cultural life, full of cafés, bookstores, and theaters. Cine Íris was born in this context of modernization of the Federal Capital, at a time when cinema was still a fascinating novelty beginning to occupy the old mansions of downtown.

The building is a masterpiece of Art Nouveau style, characterized by its organic lines and exuberant ornamentation. Its façade, protected by the Historic Heritage authority, preserves wrought-iron details, colorful stained-glass windows, and statues that evoke Greek mythology, transporting pedestrians straight into Rio's Belle Époque amid today's commercial bustle.

Facade of Cine Íris with entrance and information panel.Image description: The image is a photograph of an establishment called "Cine Íris". The facade is made of dark wood with ornamental metal details. On the left, there is an entrance with a green sign and a person walking by. In the center, there is an information panel with details about shows and films available. On the right, there is a closed door with a sign prohibiting entry to minors under 18. The floor is tiled with geometric patterns.

The interior of Cine Íris is just as impressive as its façade. Known for its luxurious Belgian mirrors and mural paintings, the cinema was designed to offer its audiences a gala experience. Over the decades, the profile of its screenings changed: from major international premieres and newsreels, the venue moved on to showing popular films and, later, adult-oriented cinema, a strategy that ensured its financial survival while other classic theaters in the area were demolished or turned into churches and pharmacies.

On the left, we see a metal handrail with ornamental details. In the center, there is a photograph of a man wearing a suit and tie, hanging on the wall above the staircase. On the right, another metal handrail complements the decoration. The background features balconies with wrought-iron balustrades, also ornamented. The ceiling is high and has decorative moldings.

Despite changes in audience and programming over more than 110 years, Cine Íris remains a symbol of urban resistance. Entering its hall is like stepping into a time tunnel that preserves the soul of a Rio de Janeiro that refused to turn off its lights, keeping alive the tradition of big-screen projection in the heart of the Historic Center.
