The Parque das Ruínas Municipal Cultural Center is a monument to Rio de Janeiro's cultural memory. The site combines the ruins of a glamorous past with a contemporary architectural intervention of metal and glass, offering a 360-degree view that stretches from Guanabara Bay and the Arcos da Lapa to Pão de Açúcar and Cristo Redentor.

The cultural center is located in Curvelo, one of the most charming sub-areas of Santa Teresa. The neighborhood, which developed around the Convento de Santa Teresa in the 18th century, became a refuge in the 19th century for the bourgeoisie and intellectuals seeking the cooler climate of the hills. The property where the park now stands was once an imposing estate, neighboring Chácara do Céu, reflecting the elite occupation that shaped the neighborhood's landscape before its transformation into an artistic and touristic hub.

The original mansion was built in the second half of the 19th century for the physician Joaquim Duarte Murtinho Nobre. However, its golden age occurred between 1920 and 1930, when Joaquim's niece, Laurinda Santos Lobo, transformed the house into the city's leading literary salon. Laurinda, known as the "Marechala da Elegância," was a great patroness of the arts, and her soirées were attended by modernist geniuses such as Villa-Lobos, Tarsila do Amaral, and João do Rio, as well as the dancer Isadora Duncan.
After Laurinda's death in 1946, the property entered a long period of decline and abandonment, even being looted and invaded. It was only in the 1990s that the Rio City Hall, through a project by architects Ernani Freire and Sônia Lopes, decided to transform the ruins into a public space.

The architectural solution was innovative: instead of rebuilding the neocolonial mansion, it was decided to consolidate the exposed brick walls and integrate them with metal walkways and large glass windows. Inaugurated in 1997, Parque das Ruínas today houses an auditorium, exhibition halls, and an outdoor stage, serving as a democratic space for celebrating art under the unmistakable light of Santa Teresa.
In 2023, the park was renamed in honor of journalist Gloria Maria.
