Rio Memórias

The Correios Cultural Center is part of the Cultural Corridor of Rio de Janeiro, in downtown Rio. Housed in a building that turned one hundred years old in 2022, the space is today a dynamic center that hosts visual arts exhibitions, theater performances, music, and dance.

Historic building with a white dome and light-colored façade in a cultural center.Image description: This is a photograph of a historic building located in a cultural center. The image shows a classical structure with a white dome on top, surrounded by more modern buildings. On the left, there is a stone building with rectangular windows and red doors. In the center, the main building has a light-colored facade with decorative columns and red windows. On the right, there is a white building with a covered balcony. In the background, a green building is partially visible. The streets are paved with stones and there are traffic signs on the corner.

The cultural center is located on Rua Visconde de Itaboraí, in the Candelária area. For centuries, this site was the main port and commercial district of Rio de Janeiro. Its proximity to the sea and to the major banking and shipping houses made this area the birthplace of Rio's urban modernization at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century.

The building, inaugurated in 1922 — the year of the Centennial of Independence —, displays an eclectic style with strong influences from German architecture. Interestingly, the building was originally planned to be the headquarters of the Lloyd Brasileiro school (a state-owned shipping company), but it ended up serving for five decades as the administrative and operational base of the Correios, bearing witness to the evolution of communications in the country.

Metal sign with a design of the Post Office's cultural building.Image description: The image is a metal plaque with a design engraved at its center. The plaque is mounted on a white wall with horizontal lines. On the left side, the text "ESPAÇO" is written vertically. In the center, there is a drawing of a building with a dome and a window. On the right side, the text "CULTURAL DOS CORREIOS" is written vertically. The plaque has a dark gray background with light-colored outlines.

After being decommissioned in the 1980s, the building underwent a major restoration to become a cultural venue. Its symbolic "relaunch" took place in 1992, during Eco-92, when it hosted the Ecological Exhibition. The official inauguration occurred the following year, with the World Philately Exhibition.

With over 3,400 m² of built area, the building unfolds from an impressive circular hall that connects its three floors. One of the visit's great highlights is the original early 20th-century elevator, still in operation, which offers a true journey through time. Outside, the center features a 1,300 m² square equipped with a reflecting pool and an acoustic shell, ideal for outdoor events in the shade of Downtown's historic buildings.

Nighttime building with an illuminated dome, blue façade, and "Centro Cultural dos Correios."Image description: This is a nighttime photograph of a building, highlighting its illuminated dome. From left to right, we see the main façade of the building, with windows decorated by blue light. In the center, the dome is intensely illuminated, standing out against the dark sky. On the right, more windows are lit up in blue, complementing the building's lighting. The "Centro Cultural dos Correios" is located in the center of the image, with the dome as the focal point.
