Taís Gomes
Gypsy Soul
was the first soap opera with daily episodes launched by TV Tupi. The previous year, TV Excelsior, its main competitor, had already introduced the daily format with the serial
2-5499 Busy.
Despite this,
Gypsy Soul
It was a pioneer because, in addition to introducing the 8 p.m. prime-time slot, it was the first soap opera recorded on videotape.
TV Tupi gained notoriety for its pioneering spirit ever since its inauguration in 1950. Its branch in Rio de Janeiro occupied the building of the former Casino in the Urca neighborhood. From then on, artists linked to film and theater were frequently seen and mobbed by fans. People from other neighborhoods would come to watch the programming in the broadcaster's auditoriums. Without a doubt, Rio's TV Tupi introduced a new way of socializing at the foot of Pão de Açúcar.
Attentive to the innovations brought by the arrival of the videotape in Brazil, TV productions began to be recorded and stored, and viewers no longer had to watch the flaws and improvisations of programs that used to be broadcast only live. The new equipment was a milestone in the creation and marketing of soap operas, making it possible to build up an archive, distribute productions, and turn the serials into daily programs.
Playwright Ivani Ribeiro was invited to write the first daily soap opera on TV Tupi. Adapted from a text by Manuel Muñoz Rico,
Gypsy Soul
was directed by Geraldo Vietri. In her soap opera debut, Ana Rosa played the nun Estela and the gypsy Esmeralda. Actor Amilton Fernandes played the role of Fernando. The resemblance between his beloved and the gypsy intrigued the leading man and the viewers. At the end of the storyline, the mystery was revealed and the twins met in a short scene at the end of the storyline. A bold move for productions at the time.
