The tunnel was founded in the year 1919 and arose from the need to travel between the Zona Portuária and the Central do Brasil.

Damaged urban image showing a tunnel, debris, buildings, and a dense city.Image description: This is a black-and-white photograph of a damaged urban area. On the left side, we see an underground tunnel with a rounded structure. In front of it, there is an open area with a lot of debris and ruins. On the right, there are multi-story residential buildings, some with sloped roofs. In the center, there is a building with a light-colored façade and evenly spaced windows. In the background, more buildings rise up, forming a densely populated city.

Thus, it gave rise to our famous "Central Tunnel."

With a length of approximately 293 meters and a width of 13 meters, it provides residents with easy access and mobility.

Urban tunnel with a stone structure and colorful houses in the background.Image description: This is a photograph of a tunnel located in an urban area. On the left side, we see a stone structure with an arch, which is the tunnel. In front of it, there is a small sign with text that is not fully legible. In the background, there is a series of colorful houses built on a hillside. The houses are of different colors, including green, yellow, and blue, with balconies and open windows. To the right of the tunnel, there is a wall covered in vegetation. The sky is clear and blue, and there are trees scattered throughout the area.

However, this was not the only purpose of the construction. There was a tenement called "Cabeça de Porco" that, at the time, was targeted by the city government for removal.

The tenement house was identified at the entrance by an iron pig's head.

Our famous tunnel was inaugurated on December 24, 1919, and has been in operation ever since, taking residents and tourists along various routes and paths.

On the right, there is also a stone wall, but with less vegetation. In the center, the tunnel is open, revealing a road that disappears into the horizon. At the top of the tunnel, there is a sign with inscriptions. The road has a central lane marked with white letters and numbers.
