The students carried out an important survey on the Nave do Conhecimento project, with a special focus on the Vila Aliança unit. The work highlights how this public facility becomes a fundamental tool for democratizing access to technology, information, and professional training in Rio's peripheries. More than just a physical space, the Nave do Conhecimento offers opportunities for qualification, digital inclusion, and the development of new skills, contributing directly to the generation of jobs, income, and citizenship. By giving visibility to the Vila Aliança unit, the students reinforce the importance of initiatives like this one in reducing inequalities and broadening the horizons of those who live in Rio's favelas, showing that knowledge and technology are also rights for everyone. Check it out below.

The Naves do Conhecimento project was launched in 2012 by the city government of Rio de Janeiro, during the first term of mayor Eduardo Paes, with the goal of democratizing access to technology and promoting digital inclusion in low-income communities. The first unit to open was the Nave do Conhecimento Tim Lopes, located in Santa Cruz, in the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro. It was inaugurated on June 1, 2012, and the unit was named in tribute to journalist Tim Lopes, murdered in 2002 while conducting an investigative interview. The Nave do Conhecimento Vila Aliança, officially named Nave Abdias do Nascimento, was inaugurated on February 3, 2013, in the community of Vila Aliança, in Bangu, West Zone of Rio de Janeiro. This unit was the eighth to open under the municipal program "Rio Digital 15 minutos," which aimed to ensure that all Rio residents had access to community digital spaces within a 1.5km radius of their homes, promoting digital inclusion and opportunities for professional training. The unit's name honors Abdias do Nascimento, an important activist, writer, politician, and defender of the rights of Black people in Brazil. His widow, Elisa Larkin Nascimento, was present at the inauguration and highlighted the importance of the tribute as a way to perpetuate the legacy of the struggle for equality and the appreciation of Black culture. The Nave do Conhecimento Vila Aliança offers a wide variety of free courses, workshops, and activities focused mainly on digital inclusion, professional training, and encouraging creativity. Below is an overview of the main areas and types of courses offered: Entrepreneurship and job market: digital marketing; social media management; how to build a résumé; interview preparation; how to open and manage a sole proprietorship (MEI). Education for children and youth: educational robotics; educational games; digital creativity workshops; reading and writing club. The Nave do Conhecimento has always been a place of learning and teaching, where we spent part of our lives. For some, it's the first contact with a computer; for others, a new opportunity to learn something extra through the courses.
