Originally, the museum's building was constructed to house the 1st Machine Gun Company in 1921, and later the Supply Company. It then housed the Reserve Officers' Preparation Center and the Brazilian Army's 5th Armored Cavalry Brigade until 1996. After undergoing renovation, it was reopened as the Museu Militar Conde de Linhares on October 12, 1998.
The museum was named in honor of D. Rodrigo de Souza Coutinho, the first Count of Linhares, a politician who accompanied the transfer of the Portuguese Court to Brazil (1808). Once in the country, he served as Minister of War and Foreign Affairs, having founded the Royal Military Academy, the Jardim Botânico, the Military Archive, the National Library, and the Royal School of Sciences, Arts and Crafts.
Conde de Linhares was a title inherited by several members of the Sousa Coutinho family. In the painting above, the 3rd Conde de Linhares, D. Rodrigo de Sousa Coutinho Teixeira de Andrada Barbosa. "There is deep, trampled blood behind the framed hero" - painting by student Beatriz Antunes (GTR301)
The museum's collection descends from the Museu Histórico do Exército and the Forte de Copacabana, as well as from donations made by other military units. The collection includes weapons from the 17th century (swords and pistols) and the 20th century (machine guns, rifles, pistols, revolvers, cannons, etc.), military vehicles, uniforms, ornaments, communication equipment, and health equipment.
The museum has five permanent exhibitions:
Evolution of Weaponry: this hall covers the evolution of weaponry from the age of chipped stone to the era of ballistic missiles.

Major Elza Room - This room was built as a tribute to the first volunteer nurse of the Brazilian Expeditionary Force and the first woman to reach the rank of major.
